When I first saw the colored denim trend for Spring I was SUPER excited. But as I started to shop for the perfect pair to add to my closet, I started to think that I might have to skip this trend SO SAD for me. It wasn't my age, but the size of my bottom that was stopping me.

Bright color + Big Bottom = too much attention to an area I'd rather hide.

But the "Fashionista" inside got the best of me! And although it may show off my "asset" a little more then I'd like, I think I'd make a pretty good Mrs. Green Jeans!

Going Tribal

I've been thinking about how I will incorporate the tribal trend into my wardrobe this season.  And scouring the internet I think I've found the answer at Gap!  Now the only questions, which pair will I choose and what color polish to wear?

This weekend marked a very special friends "big" bday (I won't mention just  how big!).   What was super special about the evening to me was the "sisterhood" in the room.  My friend grew up as one of six sisters! I can't even begin to imagine the line for the bathroom!    And, although her sisters live clear across the country, the "Hassell Girls" as they refer to themselves, made the journey to celebrate their baby sisters birthday.   The sisterhood in the room did not end there!  As Sharon remarked in her lovely speech to the group, she was lucky to have all of her sisters in the room, her "blood" sisters and her "other" sisters. The ones she has collected along the way.

 I for one am honored to have joined the collection.  Now all we need is s song as great as the one their mom wrote for them!

12 Steps to that J-LO Glow!

After watching weeks and weeks of American Idol, I have become obsessed with getting the J-Lo glow.  I think one of the keys to it is to drink a lot of water. I notice a difference when I'm getting my 40-60 oz a day!  My skin just looks better.  However, make-up can also help. So, I headed over to my local Sephora and got a quick tutorial, some product recommendations, and tricks!  


ROSEy Recommends!
1.     Start with a great primer! Smashbox Photo FinishHydrating Primer

2/3.   Mix a light foundation or tinted moisturizer with a highlighter. Apply allover.  
         Then add a little extra highlighter right at the cheekbone.  Clinque Moisture  
          Surge and Benefit  High Beam,

4.      Dust with a bit of bronzer.  Sweep from the sides of your forehead to just 
         under your cheekbone.  Hoola for Benefit

5/6.   Conceal and brighten your under eyes! Again mix a concealer and some eye 
          brightner.  Benifit Erase Paste, Smashbox Photo Op Under Eye Brightner

7.      Prime your eyelids with a brightening primer. (Petal, Jane Iredale)

8.       Highlight again.  Just accents where you need it.  I do under my brow, around
         my nose and a  bit just on the outside of my eye near my check bone.
        (Touch Eclat)

9.       Add  a natural Eye Shadow. I use one with a bit of peach to fix the grey I get  
          on  my eyelids. You should pick a color that's right for you!(Jane Iredale, Shell)
         
10.    Dust on a light coral blush with bit of shimmer. (Nars, Orgasm)

11.    Fill in your brows. (Brow Zing, Benefit)

12.  Add Mascara! (Zoom, Mac)

Top off with your favorite natural lip gloss or a bright color lipstick for a glamor look and voila! Naturally beautiful!!!

Rosey's Rags...Denim on Denim

It seems Spring has sprung everywhere around the country except here in San Francisco.  We have had nothing but RAIN, RAIN, RAIN (this is suppose to be our "dry" season).  Thank goodness we've had a bit of a break and I was able to take a quick outfit picture.
 
Forget the rule about skipping a trend if you wore it the first time around.  I say YES you can wear a trend again!  This week I'm rewinding the denim on denim trend. This was one of my favorites from the 80's and early 90's.  Now it feels more current, updated with skinny jeans, and a military twill jacket!

Here is the way I wore it now and  way back when! (Devi, this one's for you!)

 Why did I where my clothes soooo big when I was a tiny little thing?  This photo was actually taken when we visited San Francisco for the first time and decided we wanted to live here!

Now:
Jeggings; Mossimo (similar)
Top: Target
Jacket: Gap (similar)
Pashmina scarf (similar)
Bag: Coach (similar)
Sunglasses: Ralph Lauren (similar)

Then:
The only thing I remember is those jeans were Levi's. I wore them until they got holes in the knees.  Then they became shorts, until they literally fell apart!  I still miss them.

The Katniss Braid...

Are you as OBSESSED with the Hunger Games as I am?  I guess I'm still a teenager at heart.  From Harry Potter to the Twilight series and Hunger Games trilogy.  I love "Teen Lit".  Maybe it's because I have a tween at home to read it all with!

After watching the Hunger games I had a new obsession, the now famous,  "Katniss braid".  I just had to try it and scoured the internet for a how to.  And guess what it's super easy to do!!  I thought maybe the style was  too young for me, (also, my hair is very thin), but thought it would be perfect for my daughter.

 Modeled here by my daughter, I've done it two ways.  The first is a more authentic version, a bit loose and messy, just like the one worn by Katniss.  However, after a few hours at school, my daughter reported it had all fallen out.  

Messy and loose + nine year old girl = FAIL. 

 I wonder how Katniss made it through the whole time in the arena that way?   My next try was a tighter and cleaner version.  This was a winner for my girl!

How to:
(This works best on thicker hair, as the braid is not as dramatic on thin hair)

Basically, it is an inside out french braid. Also called a Dutch braid.

1.  Take a small section of hair starting on one side of your head just above your ear, for the lower version, or higher, if you want a higher braid, as in the second version.

2.  Section the hair into three sections as if to do a french braid.

3.  Begin as you would a french braid, but instead of braiding pieces over one another. braid pieces under one another.

4.  Start gathering hair as you go along and continue until you come to the nape of the neck.

5. Finish off with a backwards braid!

Enjoy! And may the odds be ever in your favor!

New Twists on Yummy Classics

I normally stick to fashion posts, but since it is a Holiday weekend, I thought it would be nice to post some fun (and easy) dessert ideas! Both are yummy for kids and adults!

Festive Rice Krispies
For this one, just follow the classic Rice KrispiesTreat recipe, add fun sprinkles and drizzle melted chocolate chips. Yummy! This would make a fun and festive Easter dessert(this also can be made with drizzled white chocolate).

Festive Matzo Surprise
 If you celebrate passover and are tired of macaroons and flourless chocolate cake, why not update you favorite *Chocolate Matzo recipe.  This year I have added a secret  layer of toffee under my chocolate and have upped the style by adding colorful sprinkles!  Fun and Yummy!

Chag Sameach and Happy Easter!!!


*Chocolate Toffee Matzo
Ingredients
1 and 1/2 sticks of butter
3/4 C of light brown sugar
1 12 oz bag of Semi Sweet or White Chocolate chips
6 pieces of Matzo

Preheat oven to 350

1. Melt butter in a sauce pan over low heat, add sugar and bring to a boil.
2. Let butter and sugar simmer bubbling for aprx 3 mins until it thickens.
3. Meanwhile place matzo on a baking sheet that you have covered with tin foil or parchment paper, sprayed with cooking spray.
4. Spread toffee mixture evenly with a knife over all of the matzo.
5. Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over all matzo.
6. Put matzo in oven for aprx 3-5 minutes until chips are slightly melted and easy to spread..
7. Spread melted chips evenly over the matzo
8. Decorate with your favorite sprinkles.
9. Refrigerate until hard and break into pieces to serve.

In the Trenches

You can add "pop" every day when you grab a trench in a fun bright color!  I love one of these trenches styled with skinny jeans and either animal printed or metallic ballet flats!  You'll really say Spring, even if they weather doesn't quite cooperate.

Get Paid For Saying Something Nice....

As all good fashion bloggers do, I spend a lot of time reading other fashion blogs.  One of my favorite daily stops is the Stylist.  And today I saw something so great I just had to share it!  As a Personal Stylist I spend a lot of time helping women "look" good.  But the truth is, helping women truly look good must first come from within!  As I always tell my daughter, you must be beautiful on the inside first.  It is very difficult for most women to achieve this "inner beauty".  Our default, is to look only at our flaws.  The big "booty", the "love handles", the whatever it is we think is wrong about ourselves.  So today, I want you all to say something good about yourselves!

As a Personal Stylist/Fashion Blogger, I spend a lot of time making other women feel good about themselves. Recently, in a moment of self reflection, I turned the tables and tried to define all that was beautiful in me. In my search, I decided to think back to my roots and I found the answer in this Wikipedia definition of a Jersey Girl. It describes to a tee what I love best about myself!!

Live Your Own Movie

My mother taught me something very powerful when I was young. She said, “Laura, your life is your own personal movie. You get to write it, cast it, direct it, and best of all, star in it. And remember, if you don’t like how some of the characters behave, you have the ability to write them out of the script altogether.”

When you see your life this way, you begin to realize how quickly you can create the life you want to live. Seeing it from an outside perspective, gives you the ability to step back and look objectively at what behaviors, relationships or other situations you want to change and what you would rather have them be.

What I’ve learned through the years is that you get to choose what the genre is as well. You get to decide if it is a comedy, a drama, a tragedy or an action film. Anything you can dream up, you can create.

As you consider what type of movie you want to live, ask yourself some questions. Do you want to laugh through life, feel intense passion and drama, or be wildly adventurous? You can create the life you want by simply deciding to write the storyline that way. It doesn’t always have to be the same. You can decide that this year is going to be an action film and next year is going to be a comedy.

Think about what you want your life to look like and how you want it to play out. What does the star act like? What does she wear? How does she live her life? Is she courageous, funny, vivacious, beautiful?

Your life is yours alone to enjoy. No one else has the right to direct it. You get to make your own decisions based on the story and the ending you want to create.

And remember, you do the casting, too. If someone isn’t treating you the way you want to be treated, write him or her out of the script, even if it is just for a few scenes so that you can get a break from them. You can always write them back in later (if you feel like it).

The point is that this movie is all about you and what you want. When you begin to live in this way, you tap into your creative power and your deepest desires. If you can dream it, you can become it. While you’re dreaming make sure it’s a box office hit, not a “straight to DVD” quality film.

2.     How would the main character act, look, think and feel?
3.     What would a happy ending look like?

Forty +, Fabulous and Pregnant?!!!

Bet you thought it was me right?! No not me! But my good friend Julie (and sometimes editor of this blog!)is, and isn't she fabulous?! Tangerine Dream

Will you be hopping on the tangerine trend for spring? I know I will, if only in some small way. You see, sometimes it's okay to skip a trend. Maybe "tangerine" isn't your fave color. I must admit it is not one of my faves! But it does look fresh and new to me. For me this trend will be more to add a bit of pop to white or denim. Maybe I'll add some fun accessories or jewelry to my wardrobe just to give it a small nod.
