It's a Nice Day For A White wedding....(Ask ROSEystyle)

I got the distressed SOS call from my sister-in-law en-route to her boss's wedding celebration (not service)!  Her friend casually asked...."so what are you wearing". She answered  "a cream dress". This sent her friend into "how could you" mode, and my sister-in-law into a tizzy!  Good thing she knows who to call.  My gut reaction was,  that rule belongs in the the same circular file as no white before Memorial Day or after Labor day.  But, after doing some research I found that responses are somewhat mixed on this topic and it's a very, very personal decision. However, I did find that Peggy Post and I agree (who would've thought a jersey girl and the daughter of good manners!)

ROSEystyle recommends....exercising good judgement when choosing any wedding attire.  Afterall, it is summer and what is more comfy then a light colored dress in hazy, hot and humid weather.  The key here is to not upstage the bride. Most likely, she will be in white, but these days who knows.  Some brides are wearing various shades of neutrals and even pink!  Anything goes.  And so I think this goes for guests  as well.

I mean do you really think in this my sister-in-law would be mistaken for a bride?!!!

Victoria Secret

Here are a few more pretty dresses to choose from for a summer wedding.  If you are still feeling white/cream is a big NO NO, choose a vibrant color.  If you prefer black but are stuck in old traditions, replace with a pretty navy.

Layered up....

One question I am frequently asked is how to dress for changeable weather.  If you are here in the Bay Area we may start the day at 50 degrees and reach a peak of 70 (if we are lucky).  You may have similar situations where you are, going from air conditioned offices to hot city streets.  Wherever you are it is good to know how to layer.  Here is a great example how I stayed cozy today, no matter what the climate!

A Room With a View

For my daughters 9th birthday she requested a room "re do".  Well her exact words were more something like "mommy, why did you make my room so pink!?" How tweeny of her!

This is the mood board I've created inspiring the redo.   Whenever I have a big project like this, I first pick a print or color theme that I love to create a road map for the room.  Next you can layer on fun accents to pull together elements from your road map to make it cohesive.  In this case my inspiration(road map) was the floral print sheets (I've featured it here as my background).  I pulled out the purple, aqua and white as my accent colors and layered in dots everywhere for added dimension and whimsy.

I must admit no project is fun without a great gal pal to play with!  My partner in crime for this project is my  SUPER creative friend Julie.  She is great with design and color, and no job is too big or too small for her! (Stay tuned for our inspiration for my next big project....My son's Bar Mitzvah)!

If you have a design project in the Bay Area you'd like help with you can email her at  ugar@comcast.net.

Check back sometime in June for the "big reveal" and get my little darling's reaction.

An Early Mother's Day

This week I made my annual trip to the Sonoma Mission Inn for a special Mother's Day retreat with some very special woman. So fun! And relaxing!  It also gave me a chance to get into one of my favorite "summer uniforms".

For warm summer days my favorite outfit is either a flowy dress or a flowy skirt paired with a tank or tee.  As the mornings are always cool here in California, a light jacket or sweater is a must have to fight the early morning chill.  This is a comfy and easy way to beat the heat and still look stylish.

Also, whenever spending a day in the sun my sun hat is never far away. This is your best investment against sun damage!!

Toes, Toes, Anything goes!

Those who know me know I am not a fan of colored nails.  It is rare that I vary from Essie mademoiselle,  As for toes? Anything goes! And as the weather in San Francisco is finally allowing for a few "flip flop" days here and there it's time for new Spring/Summer colors.

I am loving the spring collection from Essie. Choose from yummy pastels or daring brights, your toes will thank you! I am favoring the bright side of the palette. Thinking I may start with the Orange is Obvious or should I try Ole Caliente?

ROSEY's Rags...My Spring Uniform

Jacket; Gap (similar)Jeans; Mossimo, Top; Hive and Honey (similar), Shoes; Mia (smilar), Earings; Old Navy (similar)

Most clients tell me that they "wear the same thing everyday".  IF that's work out clothes, then we have an issue, but if you have a "style uniform", that's another story.  Every woman should have go to looks that they can rely on.  It should be a look that they are comfortable in, that flatters their figure type, and makes dressing easy.  A woman may have several "uniforms" to fit different seasons and occasions.  But having an idea of outfit types that work for you makes dressing each day much less of a challenge.

One of my go to staples in San Francisco for spring and summer is my denim jacket collection.  Light weight jackets are terrific for layering in the cool mornings and loosing in the the warm afternoons.  This outfit feels a bit similar to last weeks post.  Skinny Jeans, layered with a tee and topped with a denim jacket.  And that's okay!  It is one of my spring style uniforms!

Not So Gelish-ious Afterall....

looking great with gel
brittle and weak after many months of gelling
This week my love affair with gel nail polish has come to an end.  And those of you that read my original Gelish-ious post know how I sung its praises at the start.  I even stated,  "Won't damage your nails like acrylics!"   Guess what, it can. Maybe not at first but now, after several months of gelling, and gelling and gelling my nails, they have become super thin and weak, reminiscent of those old acrylic days.  YUCK!  I guess as my mother always says "if something is too good to be true, it usually is"!

While I am taking a break from regular gelling, I think I may still reserve the right to gel on special occasions!  The sign of true addict!  I'll do it even if it's not so good for me.

Let me know if you have had a similar not so gelish-ious experience!

Earth Day Style

Often if you want to be on trend, and fashion forward, your clothes are in one day and out the next.  They even refer to it as "throw away" fashion.  How can a girl be kind to the environment and still be fashionable? Consider adding one of these "eco-friendly" finds to your closet this Spring.

You will be kind to yourself and the environment!

The eco collection from H&M(in stores now) incorporates "eco-friendly" fabrics like organic cotton, Tencel, and recycled polyester.  And it's super cute and feels great! Also, you can't beat the prices from $15-$60

We already LOVE Tom's for their great one for one campaign.  Now there is another reason to love them.  They have a line of vegan shoes! These stylish and comfy flats are made using no animal by products.

This super cute clutch form Precious Hands, has a tribal feel and comes to us handmade from South America using recycled Mayan materials.

Stella McCartney is known for her "eco-friendly" fashions and now she has added sunglasses to her line! The new sustainable collection is the result of extensive research conducted to increase the use of raw materials stemming from natural origins, such as castor-oil seeds and citric acid. The collection is made from over 50% natural and renewable resources.

Hue's "I use to be a bottle"  sock can add a splash to you workout look!  Made of recycled polyester.

Happy Earth Day!

Rosey's Rags aka Mrs Green Jeans....

Gap 1969 Jegging, Gap Sweater, Mia shoes (similar), Gap Denim jacket (similar)
Stella and Dot La Coco Necklace and La Coco Cupchain, Coach Bag (similar)

Do these pants remind you of Mr. Green Jeans(remember the sidekick on Captain Kangaroo)? Or What?

When I first saw the colored denim trend for Spring I was SUPER excited. But as I started to shop for the perfect pair to add to my closet, I started to think that I might have to skip this trend SO SAD for me. It wasn't my age, but the size of my bottom that was stopping me.

Bright color + Big Bottom = too much attention to an area I'd rather hide.

But the "Fashionista" inside got the best of me! And although it may show off my "asset" a little more then I'd like, I think I'd make a pretty good Mrs. Green Jeans!

Sister Love.....

The Birthday Girl!

Sister Morse Code Necklace

COATT  morse code necklace
This weekend marked a very special friends "big" bday (I won't mention just  how big!).   What was super special about the evening to me was the "sisterhood" in the room.  My friend grew up as one of six sisters! I can't even begin to imagine the line for the bathroom!    And, although her sisters live clear across the country, the "Hassell Girls" as they refer to themselves, made the journey to celebrate their baby sisters birthday.   The sisterhood in the room did not end there!  As Sharon remarked in her lovely speech to the group, she was lucky to have all of her sisters in the room, her "blood" sisters and her "other" sisters. The ones she has collected along the way.

I for one am honored to have joined the collection.  Now all we need is s song as great as the one their mom wrote for them!

(sung to the tune of Tra-ra-ra, Boom-de-aye)

We are the Hassell Girls

We wear our hair in curls

We wear our dungarees
Way up above our knees
And when we see a man
We do the best we can
We hope you understand
We are the Hassell Girls

How's that for Girl power!?

And check out the great necklace above, one of the Hassle sisters bought for the birthday girl. The dots and dashes spell out sister in Morse Code.  Maybe there is a sister in your life who would love one too.  They offer other personalized items as well Check it out the COATT website for more details.

12 Steps to that J-LO Glow!

After watching weeks and weeks of American Idol, I have become obsessed with getting the J-Lo glow.  I think one of the keys to it is to drink a lot of water. I notice a difference when I'm getting my 40-60 oz a day!  My skin just looks better.  However, make-up can also help. So, I headed over to my local Sephora and got a quick tutorial, some product recommendations, and tricks!

ROSEy Recommends!
1.     Start with a great primer! Smashbox Photo FinishHydrating Primer

2/3.   Mix a light foundation or tinted moisturizer with a highlighter. Apply allover.

Then add a little extra highlighter right at the cheekbone.  Clinque Moisture
          Surge and Benefit  High Beam,

4.      Dust with a bit of bronzer.  Sweep from the sides of your forehead to just

under your cheekbone.  Hoola for Benefit

5/6.   Conceal and brighten your under eyes! Again mix a concealer and some eye

brightner.  Benifit Erase Paste, Smashbox Photo Op Under Eye Brightner

7.      Prime your eyelids with a brightening primer. (Petal, Jane Iredale)

8.       Highlight again.  Just accents where you need it.  I do under my brow, around

my nose and a  bit just on the outside of my eye near my check bone.
        (Touch Eclat)

9.       Add  a natural Eye Shadow. I use one with a bit of peach to fix the grey I get

on  my eyelids. You should pick a color that's right for you!(Jane Iredale, Shell)
10.    Dust on a light coral blush with bit of shimmer. (Nars, Orgasm)

11.    Fill in your brows. (Brow Zing, Benefit)

12.  Add Mascara! (Zoom, Mac)

Top off with your favorite natural lip gloss or a bright color lipstick for a glamor look and voila! Naturally beautiful!!!

Rosey's Rags...Denim on Denim

It seems Spring has sprung everywhere around the country except here in San Francisco.  We have had nothing but RAIN, RAIN, RAIN (this is suppose to be our "dry" season).  Thank goodness we've had a bit of a break and I was able to take a quick outfit picture.

Forget the rule about skipping a trend if you wore it the first time around.  I say YES you can wear a trend again!  This week I'm rewinding the denim on denim trend. This was one of my favorites from the 80's and early 90's.  Now it feels more current, updated with skinny jeans, and a military twill jacket!

Here is the way I wore it now and  way back when! (Devi, this one's for you!)

Why did I where my clothes soooo big when I was a tiny little thing?  This photo was actually taken when we visited San Francisco for the first time and decided we wanted to live here!

Jeggings; Mossimo (similar)

Jacket: Gap (similar)

The only thing I remember is those jeans were Levi's. I wore them until they got holes in the knees.  Then they became shorts, until they literally fell apart!  I still miss them.

The Katniss Braid...

Are you as OBSESSED with the Hunger Games as I am?  I guess I'm still a teenager at heart.  From Harry Potter to the Twilight series and Hunger Games trilogy.  I love "Teen Lit".  Maybe it's because I have a tween at home to read it all with!

After watching the Hunger games I had a new obsession, the now famous,  "Katniss braid".  I just had to try it and scoured the internet for a how to.  And guess what it's super easy to do!!  I thought maybe the style was  too young for me, (also, my hair is very thin), but thought it would be perfect for my daughter.

Modeled here by my daughter, I've done it two ways.  The first is a more authentic version, a bit loose and messy, just like the one worn by Katniss.  However, after a few hours at school, my daughter reported it had all fallen out.

Messy and loose + nine year old girl = FAIL.

I wonder how Katniss made it through the whole time in the arena that way?   My next try was a tighter and cleaner version.  This was a winner for my girl!

How to:
(This works best on thicker hair, as the braid is not as dramatic on thin hair)

Basically, it is an inside out french braid. Also called a Dutch braid.

1.  Take a small section of hair starting on one side of your head just above your ear, for the lower version, or higher, if you want a higher braid, as in the second version.

2.  Section the hair into three sections as if to do a french braid.

3.  Begin as you would a french braid, but instead of braiding pieces over one another. braid pieces under one another.

4.  Start gathering hair as you go along and continue until you come to the nape of the neck.

5. Finish off with a backwards braid!

Enjoy! And may the odds be ever in your favor!

In the Trenches

You can add "pop" every day when you grab a trench in a fun bright color!  I love one of these trenches styled with skinny jeans and either animal printed or metallic ballet flats!  You'll really say Spring, even if they weather doesn't quite cooperate.

Get Paid For Saying Something Nice....

As all good fashion bloggers do, I spend a lot of time reading other fashion blogs.  One of my favorite daily stops is the Stylist.  And today I saw something so great I just had to share it!  As a Personal Stylist I spend a lot of time helping women "look" good.  But the truth is, helping women truly look good must first come from within!  As I always tell my daughter, you must be beautiful on the inside first.  It is very difficult for most women to achieve this "inner beauty".  Our default, is to look only at our flaws.  The big "booty", the "love handles", the whatever it is we think is wrong about ourselves.  So today, I want you all to say something good about yourselves!

Go over to the Stylist and comment on their "We'll Pay you to Say Something Nice" post.  For each comment they will give $1 (up to $5000) to Girls Inc.   Take your first step to looking good and feeling great!

Here is my comment:

As a Personal Stylist/Fashion Blogger, I spend a lot of time making other women feel good about themselves. Recently, in a moment of self reflection, I turned the tables and tried to define all that was beautiful in me. In my search, I decided to think back to my roots and I found the answer in this Wikipedia definition of a Jersey Girl. It describes to a tee what I love best about myself!!

"…She's humble, but ambitious. She's independent, but family-oriented. She likes pizza, beer and lots of mascara, but don't think for a moment she's not sophisticated. Jersey girls are about attitude. A Jersey girl is "crunchy on the outside, and soft in the center." A Jersey girl has the tenacity and drive of a New Yorker, but with the beauty of warmth and humility that being from Jersey is all about. Don't mistake her toughness as a lack of refinement. Don't misjudge her sometimes 'brash' manners as a lack of 'classiness.' At the center of the crunchy sweet exterior, she is tuned in and knows how and what she's workin'. She's spunky and witty, and she handles competition very well. She's got that confidence. Bottom line: she's sexy as hell and if you're lucky, she's yours."

It truly is who you are on the inside that makes you beautiful.

And if you you feel like it post your comment here too! I'd LOVE to hear from you!
